Bâton Wicks The Alpine 4000m Peaks

The Alpine 4000m Peaks
by the Classic Routes

The European Alps provide the ideal arena for mountaineers of all abilities. Impressive snow-covered peaks, heavy glaciation, constantly changing weather, superb huts in fabulous locations, evocative approach valleys and ease of accessibility (by road, rail, air, cableway and mountain railway) provide all the ingredients to encourage regular climbing. By targeting the peaks above 4000 metres an inspiring challenge has been created that will give years of enjoyment. It will take mountaineers to all the major mountain groups with climbs ranging from short easy snow routes to long and serious expeditions. Most of the ascents involve an overnight stop in a hut, with a pre-dawn start and a summit gained early in the day when the majesty of the view is usually at its best.

This is not an extreme activity - many of these ascents can be undertaken by any fit person (with suitable guidance) regardless of age. Those that accumulate experience, stamina and ability can work up to the bigger climbs. Yet virtually all alpine climbs are intrinsically adventurous with very real dangers that are only overcome by guile and ability. An eventful ascent will reward with satisfactions and memories that will last a lifetime.

The Alpine 4000m Peaks outlines the strategies and skills required, providing key information to enable climbers to match their ambitions to their abilities. Whether in a guided group or in partnership with a fellow climber, the thrills of winning through to the summit of a great peak are immense - all the more interesting as one is usually following in the footsteps of the pioneers who shaped this fine sport a century and a half ago.

Cicerone Tour of Mont Blanc

Tour of Mont Blanc
Complete Trekking Guide

The Tour of Mont Blanc is recognised as one of the best of the world's classic walks: it has the excitement of a high mountain journey, with few of the worries. Taking about 11 days on the circuit round the highest range in western Europe (and so fitting comfortably within a two-week holiday), the route has plentiful accommodation, valley access and many variants. The guide describes the classic anti-clockwise route as well as the (perhaps slightly easier) clockwise route. Throughout its length the route provides beautiful views of the glorious snow, ice and rock peaks of the Mont Blanc range.

Tour of Mont Blanc Explore

Explore the Tour of Mont Blanc

The Tour of Mont Blanc is Europe's most popular long-distance walk, encircling the highest mountain in the Alps (and arguably in the continent). This classic alpine route runs for 170 km (106 miles) and takes up to 11 days. You walk through France, Italy and Switzerland, overnighting in alpine refuges. Although the route involves a lot of ascent and descent, its highest pass is at only 2665 m (8750 ft), and no technical skills or equipment are needed. The scenery is superb: majestic glaciers and snow-laden peaks overlook peaceful lakes and alpine meadows.

This guidebook to the Tour of Mont Blanc (TMB) contains all you need to plan and enjoy your holiday:

  • drop-down map showing the TMB route in four panels (1:100,000)
  • the TMB in daily stages, with summaries of distance, terrain and where to find food and drink
  • concise background on climbing Mont Blanc, geology, and wildlife
  • planning information for travel by train, bus or plane
  • in full colour, with 55 photographs
  • waterproof paper throughout.

Cicerone Walking in the Alps

Walking in the Alps

This guide describes the whole Alpine chain group by group, from the Maritime Alps behind Nice to the Julians of Slovenia, and focuses on the best walking and most scenic viewpoints in the range. Packed with practical information and enough suggestions to fill a walker's holidays for several lifetimes, Walking in the Alps is not only an authoritative reference book but an inspiration - a weaver of dreams.

Chris Bonington called the first edition 'the most comprehensive book about alpine walking in the last fifty years'.

Cameron McNeish described it as 'probably the most important guide to walking abroad that has been published in Britain' (TCO magazine).

This new edition has been fully revised and redesigned, with new maps and spectacular colour photos throughout. To paraphrase the authoritative Alpine journal: 'If you wanted to do everything listed in this marvellous book you would need to live to just over 400 years and remain fit to the end.'

That is the challenge for the reader!
