Oman

Oman is located in the Middle East, bordering the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf, between Yemen and UAE.

The modern coastal city of Muscat provides a gateway to scuba diving, dhow cruising and turtle watching, whilst the ancient inner regions provide ideal terrain to take a 4WD through wadis or desert. Some of the most luxurious hotels in the Middle East are in Oman, so this guide is suitable for up-market travellers and backpackers alike.

"A country of peace, of remarkable wilderness, and of a friendly and self-respecting people; a land steeped in a seafaring history and the ancient frankincense trade. This is Oman.

With its excellent road network it is easy to take in all the country has to offer. Visit the interior of the country – such as Nizwa – to gain a real sense of the Oman of old. Camp or picnic on a mountain or unending coastline, trek or climb through mountain ravines and swim in natural pools, or stay overnight in a desert camp. The adventurous might want to drive through wadis (dried natural watercourses) and through sand deserts, explore ancient forts and castles, dive some world-class dive sites and observe Oman’s superb marine life, or watch turtles as they come ashore to nest.

Shopaholics can visit the souks (traditional markets) and take in the aroma of burning frankincense while buying their souvenirs, or browse the modern air-conditioned malls. To relax, you can take a dhow (traditional Omani boat) trip along Muscat’s coast, passing the Sultan’s palace; or stay at top world-class hotels and experience fine cuisine. Whether you are on a budget or not, Oman is accessible to all of us. Do it all or do nothing – just savour the heat and the tranquillity of this peaceful, and thankfully still untouched, country."
